Starbucks Packaging

Pike Place Roast

In undertaking this design, I sought to leverage recognizable design elements and our brand’s history at Pike Place. Different elements of the history of Starbucks’ legacy in Pike Place market are highlighted, and include nods to the details in little badges, reminiscent of travel stickers to put on your luggage to remember fond moments by. Coffee plant botanicals are interspersed throughout the design to ensure it is grounded in coffee, Using medium roast hues over the top of the foil substrate, warm copper textures come to life for a metallic effect.

You’ll see several elements of our history in Pike Place throughout the design. Inspiration was pulled from the address numbers that are gilded in gold over the front door when you enter the store, the bronze first store plaque, and of course, there’s a nod to Rachel the piggy bank.

Gold Coast

In 1987 Starbucks celebrated their first Chicago Starbucks® store with Gold Coast Blend®. Its bold and refined flavor was an homage to the city itself. More than 30 years later—with the opening of the Starbucks Reserve® Roastery in Chicago—Starbucks introduced a limited offering inspired by this iconic coffee. For this coffee packaging the client hoped to celebrate both the history of coffee’s of the past, as well as the new Chicago Roastery. I chose to let the story do the talking in this layout by adding copy to the front of the bag. To celebrate the superfan’s of this blend, I created a new set of icons to celebrate historic milestones of the Gold Coast Blend coffee story.

Teavana Mandarin Mimosa

Similar to Starbucks Reserve coffee cards, the Teavana tea cards created for the Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Tokyo are each unique story-telling works of art that celebrates the flavors and background of the unique tea. For Mandarin Mimosa, I created an illustration of bright and juicy mandarin oranges, with copper accents to highlight the dimples of the fruit and celebrate the bubbly, sparkling mimosa-inspired component of this herbal tea blend. Real orange peel, mango, papaya and fruit flavors sparkle with lemongrass in this breezy, citrus-brightened blend. Inspired by everyone’s favorite brunch cocktail, it’s delightful whether served hot or iced.

Sulawesi Toraja

Coffee grows wild in Toraja, on Indonesia’s orchid-shaped island of Sulawesi. It was introduced in the 17th century by the Dutch, and since then arabica has thrived in the lush volcanic soil of the remote, high-mountain jungle. For this limited edition coffee coffee from Sulawesi, I chose to depict a few of these unique endemic species roaming through the bright and tropical layout. Mixed within palm trees and coffee plants, you can spot Sulawesi’s Black Macaque or Yaki Monkey, the Tarsius Tarsier, and Maleo Bird, peeking through the foliage with their glowing green eyes. The palette is inspired by the bright, rainbow eucalyptus trees that also grow in the region.
